2027: PDP, other Parties chart new course for Ebonyi

Opposition political parties in Ebonyi State have called for a renewed commitment to good governance and economic development as the state prepares for the 2027 general elections.

The call was made at the Stakeholders Political and Economic Summit held in Abakaliki on Monday, October 19, 2026, to deliberate on the future of the state and the need for leadership that prioritises the welfare of the people.

The summit, organised by political stakeholders, was themed “Ebonyi on the Pathway to Good Governance and Economic Development.”

Our correspondent reports that representatives of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), New Democratic Congress (NDC), Labour Party, African Democratic Congress (ADC), Action Restoration Movement (ARM), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and other political groups participated in the gathering.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was, however, absent from the event.

Speaking at the summit, the NDC governorship candidate, Mr Igwe Nwagu, described the gathering as educational and enlightening, noting that it provided an opportunity for political parties to exchange ideas on issues affecting the people of Ebonyi State.

Nwagu stressed that the summit was non-partisan and intended to promote inclusive democratic engagement for the benefit of the state.

He urged the electorate to support the advancement of democracy in Ebonyi and Nigeria, insisting that electoral victories should be achieved through peaceful and democratic means rather than violence.

“For me, I am confident I am on the right track. My party, the NDC, is well-prepared and determined to win. Just as Peter is winning, so also am I winning,” Nwagu stated.

In his keynote address, Mr Emmanuel Nwobo, former Leader of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, emphasised the importance of visionary leadership in determining the state’s future, particularly as political parties prepare for the 2027 elections.

He called for leadership with a clear vision for sustained prosperity, stressing the need to elect leaders capable of advancing the aspirations of the people over the next four years.

“As we prepare for the 2027 elections, our focus must be on a leader with a clear vision to usher Ebonyi into a pathway of sustained prosperity. This is the leadership Ebonyi yearns for,” Nwobo remarked.

The PDP Chairman, Mr Chukwuma Igwe, commended the organisers for convening the summit, noting that the engagement reflected a shared interest among participating political stakeholders in promoting good governance ahead of the 2027 elections.

Similarly, the NNPP State Chairman, Mr Steven Ifeanyi, praised the initiative and expressed optimism about the prospects for improved governance and economic development in Ebonyi State.

The absence of the APC was notable at the summit. As of the time of filing this report, the party had not issued an official statement explaining its decision not to participate.
