A member of the House of Representatives, Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh, has publicly apologized for assaulting a Bolt driver, an incident that gained widespread attention through a viral video. He expressed deep regrets for his behavior during the confrontation.
The apology from the lawmaker comes as outrage grows among Nigerians and human rights advocates over his actions.
A video that surfaced early Monday captured the lawmaker angrily confronting an Uber driver, whom he accused of disrespecting him by asking him to step outside to receive a parcel. The altercation escalated as the footage showed him striking the driver multiple times while allegedly threatening to “make him disappear” without repercussions.
This incident has sparked widespread condemnation on social media, with many accusing the lawmaker of abusing his position and calling for accountability. The police have confirmed they are investigating the assault allegations against him.
In response to the incident, the House of Representatives, through its spokesman Akin Rotimi, condemned the lawmaker’s behavior and urged calm, stating that they were monitoring the police investigation.
The embattled lawmaker has expressed regret, stating, “I, Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, Member of the House of Representatives, wish to address a deeply disturbing incident that occurred at my residence recently.
A video has surfaced showing me engaging in unacceptable behaviour towards an Uber driver who came to deliver a waybill for me. I am deeply sorry for my actions and acknowledge that they were unacceptable and unbecoming of a public official.”
He further recognized the trust placed in him by his constituents and the Nigerian public, saying, “My behaviour fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry. I understand that my actions have caused harm and embarrassment to the driver, my constituents, and the nation at large.”
Ikwechegh assured the public of his full cooperation with the ongoing police investigation, stating, “I support their efforts to ensure that justice is served and that those responsible are held accountable. I also appreciate the swift condemnation of my actions by my party and the Nigerian Police, demonstrating our collective commitment to upholding the law and protecting the rights of all citizens.”
To address the underlying issues that led to his actions, he stated, “I am seeking professional counseling to ensure that such behaviour never happens again. Additionally, I will be engaging in community service initiatives focused on promoting respect, empathy, and understanding.”
He urged all Nigerians to join him in fostering a culture of respect and tolerance, emphasizing the need for a society where everyone is treated with dignity.
