Chairman Nwabueze Denies Tricycle Fare Hike Allegations

In response to claims made by some members of the Tricycle Operators Association in Abakaliki regarding transportation fares, the Chairman, Comrade Uguru Nwabueze, has categorically denied any involvement in fare hikes for tricycle rides within the city.

According to the allegations, certain members claimed that the State Chairman and other officials of the Association had increased the fare for passenger drop-offs and pick-ups. The claims also suggested that any operator found charging below the set fare would face a fine of N50,000 or risk losing membership. However, Chairman Nwabueze refuted these accusations in a press briefing at the Association’s state headquarters.

“I have never discussed or authorized any fare increase at our meetings. It is solely up to each member to set their own fares, considering factors like fuel prices. The Association has never imposed any mandatory fare,” Nwabueze stated.

He further emphasized that the rising cost of essential items, including tricycle parts like clutch cables, has contributed to increased operational costs. He urged members to refrain from making baseless allegations that tarnish the Association’s image.

Nwabueze also advised the public to report any misconduct directly to the Association’s office, where proper action will be taken against wrongdoers. He highlighted that a general meeting for members is scheduled for next week to discuss the way forward for the Association in 2025.

The Chairman also expressed gratitude to Governor Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for his continued support of the Association and his efforts in improving safety within Abakaliki, including the maintenance of traffic lights. He assured the Governor of the Association’s unwavering support for his second term.
