Abakaliki FC’s woes in the ongoing Nigeria National League (NNL) worsened over the weekend following a 3-2 home loss to Sporting FC of Lagos. The defeat, witnessed by disappointed fans at the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium, Abakaliki, has officially dropped the team to the bottom of the Conference B standings.
The latest setback comes on the heels of a 1-0 loss to Solution FC of Anambra last Wednesday in Awka. With just 14 points from 15 matches, Abakaliki FC’s debut season in the NNL is now under serious threat as relegation fears mount.
Their remaining fixtures include a tough visit to Rovers FC of Calabar, a home clash with Osun United, an away tie at Godswill Akpabio Stadium, another home game against ABS FC, and a final away fixture against Madiba FC.
Observers have raised concerns over the heavy presence of clubs from the Southwest zone in the relegation zone—states known for their regional solidarity—which could further complicate Abakaliki FC’s chances of survival.
To avoid the looming disaster, stakeholders are calling for an urgent overhaul of the team across all departments. There is a pressing need to engage experienced football administrators and competent coaches who understand how to steer a struggling side away from relegation.
The recent effort by Governor Francis Nwifuru to acquire the club, following massive public demand, is commendable. However, fans warn that this initiative could be sabotaged if the team gets relegated in its very first season in the national league.
Another area of concern is the bloated number of officials accompanying the team during matches. Reports suggest that up to 20 non-playing staff often travel with the team, contrary to standard practices in professional football where no more than nine officials are allowed. Stakeholders believe that streamlining the technical and administrative staff will improve focus and reduce distractions.
Despite their league struggles, Abakaliki FC has something to celebrate: their semi-final finish in the ongoing President Federation Cup. This achievement, many believe, should serve as motivation for the team to rise above their current league challenges.
With five matches remaining, fans and officials are urging the team to win all remaining home games and secure at least a draw in their away ties to stand a chance of escaping the drop.
