Ebonyi State’s football revival takes center stage today as Abakaliki Football Club, the state’s newly-formed team, faces Madiba FC of Lagos in the opening match of the 2024-25 Nigeria National League season.
The match, scheduled for November 30, 2024, will be played at the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium, Abakaliki.
Speaking ahead of the match, the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Richard Idike, emphasized that establishing Abakaliki FC was part of the government’s broader efforts to reinvigorate sports in the state.
Idike acknowledged the challenges posed by the state’s absence from professional football for nearly two decades but expressed confidence in the team’s potential for success.
“The team has been working hard in preparation for this season. With fresh talents and a committed coaching crew, we are optimistic about a positive outcome,” Idike said.
He also commended Governor Francis Nwifuru for prioritizing sports and youth development, adding that the governor would join fans at the stadium to cheer the team to victory.
Residents have expressed excitement about the team’s debut, describing it as a long-awaited step toward rebuilding Ebonyi’s sports legacy. Some have appealed to the government to negotiate free access to the match, emphasizing the importance of massive community support for the new team.
“For many of us, this is a dream fulfilled. It’s been over 15 years since we witnessed professional football in our state. This marks the beginning of a new era,” said a resident, John Nwiboko.
As Abakaliki FC takes to the field, hopes are high that this historic match will set the tone for a successful season and mark a turning point in Ebonyi’s sporting history.
