Abidjan Braces for Traffic Surge as AFCON 2023 Opening Match Approaches

Heavy traffic engulfed the city of Abidjan, the capital of Cote D’Ivoire, in anticipation of the 2023 African Cup of Nations’ opening match between the host, Elephants of Cote D’Ivoire, and Guinea Bissau.

On Saturday, our NAN correspondent, covering the tournament in Abidjan, observed the security agencies’ efforts to manage the situation. Despite their best attempts, newsmen and supporters faced difficulties accessing the stadium due to heightened security measures and traffic congestion.

Expressing disappointment, some motorists and pedestrians shared their concerns with NAN, urging the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to improve arrangements for such scenarios. However, a few acknowledged their excitement that the African Cup of Nations was being hosted in their country.

Despite the challenging circumstances, some Ivorians found a way to bring joy to the situation. A few kilometers away from the Alassane Ouattara stadium, locals were spotted dancing and drumming, aiming to entertain those stuck in the traffic gridlock.”
