Actress Ufoma Opens Up About Her Battle with Kidney Disease

Nollywood actress Ufoma McDermott has opened up about her long battle with kidney disease, revealing that it was caused by years of painkiller abuse. In a candid interview with popular media personality Chude Jideonwo, McDermott shared the details of her 12-year struggle with the illness and urged the public to prioritize their health.

“My brother was diagnosed late, at stage 4 of kidney disease, and went straight into dialysis, facing severe complications,” she said. “I was diagnosed earlier, so I’ve been on medication for almost 12 years now. When my brother was diagnosed, I immediately consulted my cardiologist. My parents were worried, wondering if this was genetic. We traced the kidney disease and discovered it was a result of drug abuse.”

She continued, reflecting on the root of her health issues: “I grew up with migraines, headaches, and eyeaches, and I refused to wear my glasses because they made me feel like a geek. I relied on strong painkillers—far beyond ordinary ones—because I wanted the pain to stop.”

McDermott’s revelation serves as a reminder of the dangers of excessive medication and the importance of early diagnosis and proper health care.
