APC Lawmakers Accuse Governor Alia of Benue State of Ineffective Governance, Seek Intervention from Tinubu

The National Assembly caucus from Benue State, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), issued a scathing rebuke against Governor Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, accusing him of running the state government like a parish. The lawmakers, in a press briefing held in Abuja, urged President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to intervene promptly before the state faces further challenges.

Senator Titus Zam, the leader of the caucus and Senator representing Benue North West, conveyed their concerns. He revealed that the matter had been reported to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, who has been mediating to normalize the situation.

The caucus members emphasized their apprehension over the absence of democratic leadership in Benue State in the last six months, citing Governor Alia’s conduct as arrogant and egocentric. They expressed concern that if not addressed, these tendencies could lead to the party’s defeat in future elections in the state.

In a detailed account of their grievances, the caucus outlined instances where Governor Alia allegedly undermined the APC and its members. They highlighted issues such as the election of the speaker of Benue House of Assembly, the nomination of caretaker committees for local governments, and the governor’s alleged disrespect for members of the National Assembly.

The lawmakers accused Governor Alia of disregarding party nominations, forming unholy alliances with the opposition, and making appointments without adhering to zoning arrangements. They also alleged a lack of consultation with National Assembly members and criticized the governor for not having a known developmental blueprint for the state.

The caucus concluded by cautioning that APC members in Benue State were losing faith in the administration due to Governor Alia’s leadership style. They called for urgent intervention to safeguard the party’s electoral prospects in the future.

In a related development, Hon. Philip Agbese, representing Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, accused Governor Alia of nepotism, claiming that over 30 key political officers were appointed from the governor’s immediate clan in Vandeikya LGA, while the Idoma-speaking people from Benue South were allegedly marginalized.”
