What could have ended in tragedy turned into a remarkable display of courage and swift military response along the Aba-Umuahia expressway, as a brave bus driver and alert soldiers foiled a kidnapping attempt, ensuring the safe rescue of all passengers.
The incident involved two Coaster buses transporting passengers from Aba to Umuahia. Unknown to the travelers, about six armed men posing as commuters had boarded the vehicles in Aba. Shortly after departure, the assailants revealed their weapons, seized control of the buses, and attempted to divert them through a secluded route.
However, in a daring show of resistance, the driver of the leading bus defied their orders. Despite being threatened at gunpoint, he accelerated instead, heading straight toward the Isialangwa military checkpoint. The kidnappers reportedly warned they would shoot, but the determined driver refused to stop.
His bold action paid off. Soldiers stationed at the checkpoint immediately intervened, engaging the kidnappers and apprehending them on the spot. Firearms were recovered, and all passengers from both buses were rescued without injury.
The military has since launched an investigation to uncover the full scope of the plot and identify any possible accomplices involved in the attempted abduction.
Authorities have praised the driver’s bravery and the swift response of the army, describing the outcome as a testament to the importance of vigilance and coordinated security efforts along Nigeria’s highways.
