The Chairman, Ebonyi Scrap Dealers Association, Nwigwe Eric Ejike, shares the remarkable journey of scrap businesses in Ebonyi, how they are making a positive impact on the environment, providing employment opportunities, and helping combat vandalism in the State, proving that they are more than just recyclers of discarded materials but active contributors to the welfare and growth of the State, transforming Ebonyi into a cleaner, safer and more prosperous place.

Over the past few years, the scrap business has faced challenges following bans placed due to allegations of vandalism. However, a change in administration has reinvigorated the industry, resulting in a resurgence of business activity. The scrap industry is a global force for economic growth and environmental stewardship.

Addressing the issue of vandalism, the chairman points out that scrap dealers often unfairly face accusations of theft and vandalism. However, by allowing the legitimate scrap trade to operate, the association have formed a united front against vandalism.

Maintaining that they are now working together to maintain law and order within the industry, preventing unregistered individuals from engaging in illegal activities.

“Last Month, we caught two people who were vandals. We handed them over to the Civil Defence. It’s important to know that these individuals were not part of our scrap dealer group; one of them came from Enugu, and we caught him,” he said.

Regarding the future, Chief Ejike envisions a united and organized association, featuring larger companies within Ebonyi State that create more employment opportunities.

He calls on governments both Federal and State government to support the scrap industry, emphasizing that local investors have more significant impact on job creation and economic growth compared to foreign investors.

Interacting with some of the scrap dealers, Jeremiah Emeka and Chukwuka Joseph, who disclosed how lucrative scrap business has been but constantly face harassment from security officers due to the activities of vandals.

“Some security officials make it look like an illegal business, intimidating us when they see someone with scrap. Additionally, the cost of transportation to recycling companies is high. We appeal to the government to provide recycling facilities nearby.”

Another scrap dealer, Pastor JC, who has been in the business for seven years, noted that starting with as little as five thousand naira can be profitable. Similarly, Mrs. Roseline Ugoma, who has been in the business for three years, encouraged women who are idle to embark on this endeavor, as it has helped sustain her family.
