The Scrap Dealers Association of Ebonyi State has enforced a mandatory ID card and jacket policy as part of measures to curb vandalization and criminal activities in the state.
The policy aims to distinguish legitimate members of the association from individuals engaging in illegal activities under the guise of scrap dealing.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Afikpo/Edda Scrap Dealers Association executives, the Chairman, Chief Nwigwe Eric Ejike, emphasized the importance of discipline and accountability within the union.
He charged the new leaders to uphold peace, unity, and professionalism in their operations.
Chief Nwigwe warned that any scrap dealer operating without the association’s recognized ID card and jacket would face arrest, reiterating that the measure is key to preserving the association’s image and ensuring public confidence in their operations.
” I feel very happy for a day like this, having my association to be inaugurated in Afikpo land.
“I charge you the new executive members to try and maintain the already established relationship with the dignitaries and security officials.
“We have countless cases of reported vandalization, both police, internal security and civil defense.
“Charge your taskforce to be active on the streets. Arrest anyone operating without proper identification and hand them over to the appropriate authorities. This is the only way to prove that our association does not support vandalization,” he added.
The State Coordinator and former chairman of the Abakaliki Scrap Dealers Association, Mr. Azi John, commended Chief Nwigwe’s leadership, noting that the union had grown significantly under his guidance. He urged the new executives to be diligent in their responsibilities to sustain the association’s progress.
Similarly, the former Coordinator of the Afikpo/Edda Scrap Dealers Association, Mr. Jeremiah Emeka Ikpozu, expressed gratitude for the recognition accorded him. He highlighted the progress made during his tenure, which included enhanced public perception of scrap dealers as legitimate businessmen.
A member of the Essa Traditional Council in Afikpo, who also spoke at the event, commended the union for its efforts to address vandalism. He urged the newly inaugurated executives to deliver on their promises and work closely with security agencies to curb criminal activities linked to the industry.
The event marks a renewed commitment by the scrap dealers in Ebonyi to promote professionalism, eliminate illegal operations, and build a trustworthy reputation within the state.
