Federal Government Initiates Resettlement Project: Foundation Laid for Construction of Homes for IDPs in Benue

“Minister for Humanitarian Affairs Launches Resettlement Project in Benue: 20 Units of Clustered Settlements to Provide Homes for Displaced Persons

Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, revealed the commencement of a significant project after laying the foundation for the construction of 20 units of clustered settlements in Mbagwen, Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State. The initiative aims to address the housing needs of internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Dr. Edu emphasized that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to ensuring that Nigerians do not live in shanties. The President is particularly concerned about the challenges faced by those displaced from their ancestral homes and has pledged to resettle them. Dr. Edu stated, “It is time for Benue people who have cried for too long to enjoy. This is the beginning of a journey to return home.”

Highlighting President Tinubu’s promise to collaborate with Governor Hyacinth Alia to facilitate the return of the displaced people, Dr. Edu expressed the hope that this initiative marks the fulfillment of that commitment. She acknowledged the pain and suffering endured by the people due to displacement by bandits and assured them that hope is on the horizon. Dr. Edu emphasized the President’s desire for people to live in dignified homes where they can contribute to food production for the nation. The minister noted that the people would actively participate in building their houses, thereby empowering them financially.

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State applauded President Tinubu for honoring his commitment to returning the people to their ancestral homes. He urged patience from the people and acknowledged the persistent attacks dating back to 2010, with heightened incidents in 2016.

Hon. Berger Alfred, the House of Assembly member for Makurdi North, lamented the tragic toll of more than 12,000 lives lost to bandit attacks since 2011. Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs Aondoawase Kunde stressed the importance of implementing measures to prevent and reduce vulnerability to future disasters, in collaboration with security agencies.

Congratulating the IDPs on the prospect of a new lease of life, Kunde called on them to support the government for a smooth and successful return process.”
