Federal Government Urges Increased Investment in Irrigation Infrastructure for Economic Growth

The Federal Government has issued a call to both state governments and investors, urging them to ramp up direct investments in irrigation infrastructure development nationwide. The objective is to bolster food production, ensuring the sustenance of the nation and fostering economic growth and job creation.

Engr Joseph Terlumun Utsev, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, conveyed this message to the press during the commissioning of the Rafin Yashi Dam and irrigation scheme in Minna, Niger State. This event was part of his ongoing familiarization tour of the Upper Niger River Basin Development Authority.

The Minister encouraged other River Basin Development Authorities in the country to follow the lead of the Upper Niger River Basin Development Authority in exploring the Agro-and-Eco Tourism potential of their dams. He believes this approach will not only enhance socio-economic activities but also align with the Federal Government’s initiative for partial commercialization.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to the ongoing partial commercialization of dams and key projects managed by River Basin Development Authorities nationwide, the Minister called upon states and private investors to collaborate closely with these authorities to maximize their potential. He assured that the Ministry would contribute bulk water and expertise to help achieve targets for local food consumption and export, thereby ensuring sustainable growth in the agricultural sector.

“We have the dams, the water, and the expertise. We encourage state governments and investors to collaborate with us to meet the targets of expanding irrigation development, food production, and harnessing the economic potentials of the River Basins,” stated Engr. Utsev.
