FG Unveils Ambitious Plan: Aims to Lift 50 Million People Out of Poverty in 42 Months, Says Minister

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, has announced the Federal Government’s commitment to a strategy aimed at pulling 50 million people out of poverty within the next 42 months. Dr. Edu emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s deliberate efforts in implementing various poverty alleviation programs to support vulnerable individuals in the country.

In an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Thursday, the minister highlighted that the poverty alleviation initiatives would involve collaboration between her ministry and other relevant ministries. She pointed out the significance of collective efforts to ensure economic growth in the country, citing collaboration with the Ministry of Trade and Industries as an example. Dr. Edu mentioned the provision of loans by the government to individuals engaged in small businesses across the nation through the SMEs.

“We are drawing out a strategy to be able to get 50 million persons out of poverty within 42 months. Now, that is not just going to be only the job of my ministry to do. There is going to be an inter-sectorial collaboration with other ministries, for instance, the Ministry of Trade and Industries,” she stated.

Dr. Edu underlined the government’s intentional focus on poverty alleviation and commended President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the poor and vulnerable in society.

The minister also announced the resumption of payment for N-Power beneficiaries, noting that arrears were being settled. She assured beneficiaries that the payment process would continue until every eligible person had received their dues.

“Presently, a payment for N-Power is ongoing; we were in the office yesterday up until the early hours of this morning, just to ensure that young people get monies that they have been owed from the last government. And of course, all of this is being restructured to ensure that we reduce unemployment and create jobs for Nigerians,” Dr. Edu affirmed.
