The Ebonyi state governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has officially flagged off the reconstruction of the 13-kilometer Igboji/Odomowo road, which connects Igboji to Oferekepe in Ikwo Local Government Area.
This strategic road is vital for the movement of people and goods, especially for farmers who are top producers of rice and yam in the area. However, the road, originally constructed during Chief Martin Ekechi’s administration, has become dilapidated over time.
Representing the Governor, the Commissioner for Works, Engr. Lebechi Mbam, noted that about seven bridges along the road remain in good condition, he urged the contractor to adheres to the state government’s quality standards during construction.
He further urged local community leaders to monitor the project closely and report to relevant authorities if necessary.
“The road is designed for reconstruction with rigid pavement and a width of 7.3 meters, with 1-meter shoulders on both sides and proper drainage systems.
“We’ve tested the bridges, and they remain very sound, which is why none will be demolished. This project will be completed within 12 months, and if the contractor is found lacking in performance, the contract will face termination,” he stated.
The speaker whom the road project is in his own community thanked the State Governor for embarking on the road project for the benefit of his people and other surrounding communities, he urged the contractor to ensure quality work that would stand the test of time while pledging his unalloyed support to the Governor, stating that the people of Ikwo Nnoyo will remain loyal to Governor’s administration.
“Our people have long awaited this road, which will connect multiple communities and ease the transport of agricultural products to other parts of the state, including Abakaliki.
“The Governor’s initiative will greatly benefit these agrarian areas,” the Speaker remarked.
The former Nigerian Ambassador to Argentina, Ambassador Jonah Mkpuruka, the traditional ruler of the community, Ezeogo Mgbebu Onwe, and the Ikwo Central Coordinator, Iboke Thankgod Sinbad, commended the Governor’s efforts, highlighting his commitment to the development of Ikwo, including the emergence of their son, Mr. Moses Odunwa, as Speaker of the Assembly.
However, the contractor, Dr. Smart Ebinga, revealed that the project will be executed in three phases.
The first four kilometers will be completed in four months, followed by another four kilometers in the next four months, with the final five kilometers expected to be completed in the last phase.
“This road spans 13 kilometers, with 6.9 kilometers crossing swampy terrain. We have divided the project into three sections to ensure smooth progress and completion within the 12-month contract period,” Dr. Ebinga explained.
