The House of Representatives has initiated an investigation into the assault involving its member, Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, who reportedly attacked a Bolt driver on Sunday.
This decision arose from a matter of privilege raised by House Leader Prof. Julius Ihonbvere, who emphasized that the incident tarnished the House’s reputation.
During the plenary session, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the meeting, acknowledged that while Ikwechegh had offered an emotional apology, it was essential to uphold the House’s rules.
Kalu highlighted the mounting pressure on Parliament to respond appropriately, stating that any action must adhere to the established procedures. He reiterated that the House’s rules dictate the need for a thorough investigation to ensure fairness and justice.
“It would be inappropriate to render a verdict without first allowing all parties to present their sides,” Kalu remarked, as he directed the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges to look into the matter and report back within two weeks.
In his motion, the House Leader revealed he had received numerous calls and messages regarding the incident involving the lawmaker and the driver.
