The newly appointed president of Ebonyi State Tipper Drivers Union, Comrade Edwin Nkwegu, has pledged transparency in his leadership following his assumption of office on Monday.
His appointment came after the dismissal of the administration led by Comrade Onicha Chinedu.
Nkwegu expressed gratitude to the state governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru, for his swift intervention, which he said helped avert a potential crisis within the union.
He also called on the former president, Comrade Chinedu, to support his administration, emphasizing the importance of unity for the union’s progress.
Speaking at his first meeting with union members at their office in Centenary City, Abakaliki, Nkwegu outlined his plans to restore the union’s past glory, ensure peace, eliminate illegal levies, and improve members’ welfare.
Stating “So under my watch I will work to restore the past glory of this union, make peace, stop illegal levies, improve on the welfare of our members.
“I will also ensure that unconditional harassment, intimidation and arrest of our members will end. I will generate accurable revenue for the state government.
“But, I cannot achieve these without your supports, together we will stand more stronger than even,” he stated.
The state government had removed the previous leadership for mismanagement of funds and the imposition of multiple levies on tipper drivers.
