Abakaliki, Ebonyi State –
Despite a nationwide security alert stemming from calls for a “free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu” protest, the Ebonyi State capital, Abakaliki, has been affirmed as calm and peaceful by the state’s security apparatus.
The initial news report noted that some members of the public exhibited fear of the unknown, leading to a partial lockdown as banks, shops, and popular supermarkets were kept under lock and key. This apprehension came despite the absence of any actual protest in the city.
Speaking on the development, Prince Victor Chibuoyi, the State Commander of the Neighbourhood Watch, assured residents that his organization is fully committed to the protection of lives and properties. He categorically affirmed that “there is no protest in Ebonyi State.”
Commander Chibuoyi noted that while security forces are actively ensuring peace, there has been no gathering related to the protest, citing an earlier announcement by the Department of State Services (DSS) against public assemblies.
While acknowledging the right to peaceful protest, he warned that such actions could be hijacked by hoodlums, a risk seen during the ENDSARS protests. He urged citizens to “continue with their legitimate business,” dismissing any idea that the business closures were based on government instruction.
The Commander reiterated: “The street of Abakaliki is very cool and calm, and that’s why people are going about their normal business; nobody disturbs them. Ebonyi State is peaceful, and it will remain peaceful.”
