Owerri,
The Ohanaeze Youth Council has come out in strong defense of Governor Hope Uzodimma’s ongoing federal road construction projects in Imo State, urging critics to focus on the long-term economic benefits of the developments rather than engage in what it called politically motivated attacks.
Speaking to journalists in Owerri on Thursday, the National President of the Ohanaeze Youth Council, Comrade Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, expressed dismay over the recent backlash from some political stakeholders concerning the state’s intervention in federal road construction.
According to Comrade Igboayaka, the ongoing rehabilitation and dualization of roads such as the Umuahia, Okigwe, and Orlu federal roads have significantly improved transportation and trade access within Imo and to neighboring states.
He said, “Over the past three years, commuters using the Okigwe-Enugu route have testified to its convenience and ease of travel. These road projects are boosting business connectivity and contributing to the state’s internally generated revenue.”
The youth leader criticized what he described as attempts by some politicians to undermine the current administration’s efforts, suggesting that such criticisms may be rooted in partisan interests ahead of the 2027 elections. He also highlighted that previous administrations failed to address the same roads now being reconstructed.
He called for a more constructive and objective approach to governance discourse in the state, emphasizing that development should not be sacrificed on the altar of political rivalry.
In addition to praising the governor’s strides, Igboayaka appealed to Governor Uzodimma to consider expanding road rehabilitation to other neglected areas within local governments. He mentioned specific routes such as the roads from Ntueke to Isiekenesie and onward to Okwelle, Ahiara Junction to Ehime Mbano Aba-Branch, Orlu to Ihiala and Uli, Anara Junction Isiala Mbano to Ehime Mbano, Oriagu to Obowo Seven and Half Junction, Umuna Orlu to Nkwerre and Amaraku, and from Akokwa to Arondizuogu and further to Okigwe.
“These roads have remained a source of pain to Imolites for over two decades,” he said, urging the governor to extend his developmental agenda to rural communities.
The press briefing ended with a call on the people of Imo to support efforts that advance the state’s economic growth, irrespective of political affiliation.
