Okporojo/Amasiri Killings: Ebonyi Diaspora Urges Gov Nwifuru to Restore Peace

By Brenda Chidinma Imo-Eze

The Ebonyi State Union UK & Ireland has called on the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, to sustain efforts toward restoring lasting peace following the recent killings arising from the communal clash between Okporojo, Oso Edda and Amasiri communities.

In a strongly worded letter addressed to the governor, the diaspora body expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and destruction of property, describing the violence as painful and unfortunate, especially given the long-standing ancestral, cultural and familial ties binding both communities.

The union noted that Amasiri and Okporojo share common bloodlines through well-known matrilineal origins such as Ikwu, Ibe Udu, Ibe Omagha and Ewankporie, among others, stressing that the crisis represents a tragic conflict among people bound by shared heritage and inter-marriages.

While condemning the killings, the group commended Governor Nwifuru for his prompt and decisive intervention, including the swift deployment of security personnel and imposition of a curfew, which it said prevented further escalation at a time emotions were running high.

The diaspora body also acknowledged the governor’s record in resolving other communal disputes across the state, including the Effium/Ezza and Isi Nkwo/Abaomege crises, noting that his interventions have helped stabilize affected areas and restore normalcy.

Appealing for sustained dialogue, negotiation and inclusive engagement between the warring communities, the union emphasized that justice must be pursued through lawful means by identifying and prosecuting those responsible for the violence, describing accountability as a critical pillar for sustainable peace.

In a show of solidarity, the group announced a humanitarian assistance package valued at ₦2 million to be shared between the affected communities to cushion the hardship faced by families during the crisis.

The union further revealed that a minute silence was observed during its recent general meeting in honour of those who lost their lives, while extending condolences to bereaved families and praying for the repose of the departed souls.

Reaffirming its commitment to peace and development in Ebonyi State, the union pledged continued support to the state government and urged indigenes of both communities to embrace dialogue over conflict, stressing that peace remains the only pathway to progress.
