In a recent interview with The SpringNews, Dr. Augustine Nwazunku, the chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, expressed the party’s disapproval of the decision by former Senator Obinna Ogba and his followers to leave the PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC). The PDP chairman firmly stated that the party is better off without individuals like the former senator.
Obinna Ogba, along with former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, and others, made headlines last week by defecting to the APC. Ogba cited leadership inconsistencies as the reason for his departure from the PDP.
However, Dr. Nwazunku defended the PDP’s position, emphasizing that the party remains intact and is determined to challenge the ruling APC in future elections in Ebonyi State. He suggested that Ogba’s decision to switch parties stemmed from his failure to secure the PDP’s gubernatorial ticket in 2022.
Nwazunku remarked, “We in the PDP have chosen to move forward without the distractions of these planted fifth-columnists, but they seem to be prolonging their exit from the PDP to the APC with orchestrated theatrics. This comes seven months after these individuals betrayed the PDP and supported the APC in the previous general elections.”
The PDP chairman also highlighted the role of the party in shaping Ogba’s political career, noting that it was the PDP that provided him with the platform and exposure that led to his two terms in the Senate from 2015 to 2023. Nwazunku concluded by saying, “If he believes he can undermine the party that contributed to his current standing, we wish him the best of luck.”
