In a distressing case that has sent shockwaves through the community, the Adamawa State Police Command has apprehended Ja’afar Adamu, a 36-year-old man, on allegations of raping his 21-year-old neighbor’s wife in Anguwan Diocese Kala’a, situated in the Hong Local Government Area.
The arrest was made on September 15, as revealed by SP Suleiman Nguroje, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), in a statement released in Yola on Tuesday.
According to Nguroje, the disturbing incident occurred on the same date, around noon, when the victim’s husband was absent, tending to his farm. Taking advantage of this absence, the suspect reportedly entered the house and forcibly engaged in sexual activity with the victim.
The situation escalated further as it was disclosed that the suspect was wearing a black face mask and brandishing a knife, using it to intimidate the victim into compliance with his demands. However, in a twist of fate, during the ordeal, the mask fell off, leading to the victim’s recognition of the assailant, who subsequently fled through a window.
The victim promptly reported the incident to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Kala’a, which initiated the investigation process.
In response to this heinous act, Mr. Afolabi Babatola, the Commissioner of Police, expressed his strong disapproval of the incident. He directed the officer in charge of the Family Support Unit to lead the investigation and ensure the diligent prosecution of the alleged perpetrator.
The Commissioner of Police also extended his sympathies to the husband of the victim, acknowledging the unfortunate nature of the incident. He called upon the public to support the command’s efforts in combatting all forms of Gender-Based Violence.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the pressing need to address issues related to gender-based violence within communities and underscores the importance of law enforcement agencies in ensuring justice for victims.
