Rep Nkemkama Kama Tasks NAWOJ on Maternal Health Advocacy in Rural Areas

Nkemkama Kama member representing Ohanivo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, , has expressed deep concern over the rising rate of maternal mortality in Ishiagu and other parts of Ebonyi state, calling on the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) to intensify advocacy on maternal and child health.

Kama made the appeal on Friday when members of Ebonyi State NAWOJ paid him a courtesy visit in Abakaliki.

The lawmaker, citing information from health authorities, said the mortality rate among women in Ishiagu and Ohaukwu local government has reached a worrisome level, and urged the association to use its media platform to sensitize both government and the public on the urgent need to address the trend.

“The mortality rate is terribly high, especially in Ishiagu. No woman should die because she is bringing life into the world. That is unacceptable,” he said.

He revealed that plans are underway to strengthen the General Hospital in Ishiagu and to push for the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in the area, to make quality healthcare more accessible to rural dwellers.

Hon. Kama encouraged NAWOJ to collaborate with the Ministry of Health and other relevant agencies to champion enlightenment campaigns on maternal health, safe delivery, and women’s welfare.

“I want you, as women journalists, to take up advocacy on this issue. Engage the Commissioner for Health and other stakeholders to find ways of reducing maternal deaths in our communities,” he charged.

Hon. Kama further pledged to support NAWOJ in future programmes aimed at empowering women and promoting public health in his constituency.

In her response, the Chairperson of NAWOJ, Ebonyi State Chapter, Comrade Nkechinyere Oginyi, commended the lawmaker for his commitment to community development and concern for women’s health.

“We appreciate your passion for the welfare of women and your emphasis on quality healthcare. NAWOJ will take up the challenge by partnering with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to raise awareness and advocate for improved maternal health in Ishiagu and beyond,” she assured.
