Senator David Jimkuta, representing Taraba South senatorial district, has made an appeal to President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on security in the Takum and Ussa local government councils of Taraba State. Jimkuta believes that such a declaration would help address the ongoing reckless killings in these areas.
The Senator, who also serves as the Senate Committee Chairman on Social Warfare and Poverty Alleviation, emphasized the urgent need for action during a media interaction on Tuesday in Wukari council. He argued that declaring a state of emergency in the affected areas would facilitate the return of farmers to their farmlands and enable them to rebuild their lives amid the unprecedented threat to the region’s food security.
Jimkuta disclosed that over 700 individuals have lost their lives in the two local councils within the past three months. He expressed concern that if the killings are not promptly addressed, the violence could spread to other parts of the state.
Expressing his sorrow over the situation, the Senator highlighted the disarray caused by banditry activities, affecting over 50 villages in Ussa and Takum. He called on security agencies to take decisive action and urged collaboration with locals to track down the bandits and kidnappers terrorizing the areas.
Jimkuta stated, ‘We know where they are; let’s flush them out. These areas are major food producers, and with people displaced and unable to access their villages, we are facing a looming food crisis.’
Residents of the two councils have been living in fear due to the unabated killings perpetrated by bandits, as reported by SPRINGNEWS.”
