In a ruling delivered on Friday, the Supreme Court upheld the election of Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the Governor of Lagos State. Justice Garba Lawal, reading the lead judgment, dismissed the appeal filed by the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour.
Sanwo-Olu, in his earlier submission, had urged the Supreme Court to reject the appeals challenging his victory in the February 25 governorship election. Rhodes-Vivour, along with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Abdulazeez Adediran, had contested Sanwo-Olu’s victory.
The LP, in its plea to the apex court, argued that the March 18 election suffered from irregularities and non-compliance with the Electoral Act. They also contended that Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat was not qualified to contest the election.
Similarly, Adediran presented 34 grounds of appeal, seeking the Supreme Court’s intervention to overturn the decisions of the Lagos State Governorship Election Tribunal and the Court of Appeal.
During the proceedings, counsel to Sanwo-Olu, Nas Ogunsakin, pointed out that the applicants failed to provide evidence supporting their claims and that the witnesses brought forward were deemed incompetent.”
