SWAN to Honor Ogalegu for Outstanding Contributions to Sports Development in Ebonyi

Sports is more than just an activity—it is a source of joy, unity, and mental relief for people across all walks of life, whether as players or spectators. In Ebonyi State, one individual who has significantly invested in sports development and human empowerment is Tochukwu Ogalegu, popularly known as “T-Man.”

A native of Ezzamgbo in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, Ogalegu has made remarkable contributions through his pet project, Zelunjo Human Empowerment Foundation, providing livelihood opportunities for the unemployed and underprivileged. His annual Zelunjo Football Tournament, which brings together teams from Ezzamgbo, Ngbo, Effium, and Ezza Effium, has not only promoted youth engagement in sports but also played a vital role in restoring peace in the once-troubled Effium and Ezza Effium communities.

In recognition of his dedication to sports and community development, the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ebonyi State Chapter, will honor Ogalegu with an award during the grand finale of its one-week-long event on April 3, 2025, in Abakaliki. The event will also feature the inauguration of Ebonyi State Governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru, as the Grand Patron of SWAN, in accordance with the laws governing the association for over 50 years.

SWAN’s National Executive Officer, Comrade Ijeoma Peter Nwante, extended congratulations to all the selected honorees, applauding their contributions to the sports sector. She further urged individuals in positions of economic and political advantage to invest in sports as a means of fostering unity, responsible lifestyles, and career opportunities—especially in light of the prevailing economic challenges and high youth unemployment.

Nwante also commended Governor Nwifuru for acquiring Abakaliki FC, nicknamed ‘The Rice Boys,’ marking a revival of state-owned football teams after the unjustifiable disbandment of Ebonyi Angels and Ebonyi Queens by a previous administration. She further called for increased investments in other sports, including athletics, to enhance Ebonyi’s performance at national and international competitions.
