Toxic Masculinity in Adolescent Boys: Impact on Violence Against Women

By Stella Chinyere Udu

Toxic masculinity refers to harmful cultural norms that equate masculinity with dominance, aggression, and emotional suppression. This issue is particularly pressing among adolescent boys, as they are forming their identities and beliefs about gender roles. Understanding its impact on violence against women is essential for fostering a healthier society.

Boys often receive messages that encourage toughness and aggression while dismissing vulnerability. Those who embrace toxic masculinity are more likely to resort to violence, viewing women as objects for power and control. This mindset can lead to dating violence and sexual assault, as aggression becomes normalized in the pursuit of masculinity.

During adolescence, peer approval is crucial. Boys may engage in aggressive behaviours to gain status within their peer groups, perpetuating toxic attitudes. This environment can normalize the demeaning treatment of women, resulting in a culture where violence is tolerated.

The impact of toxic masculinity extends beyond individual behavior, affecting the safety and well-being of women. It fosters a culture of fear and mistrust, restricting women’s freedom and opportunities. Boys who grow up in this environment often carry these harmful beliefs into adulthood, affecting their future relationships.

To combat toxic masculinity and its effects, education is vital. Schools and communities should promote healthy masculinity, empathy, and respect through programs that foster open conversations about emotions and relationships. Parents also play a crucial role by modeling respectful behavior and encouraging emotional expression.

Addressing toxic masculinity among adolescent boys is key to reducing violence against women. By challenging harmful stereotypes and promoting empathy and respect as we gather to reflect on Beijing +30 at the forthcoming UNCSW 2025, development partners should begin to look at toxic masculinity as we can create a safer and more equitable environment for all. It is a collective effort that can redefine masculinity for future generations.
