The 2025 International Youth Week officially began in Ebonyi State on Wednesday with a strong call for young people to embrace technology, unity, and multilateral cooperation.
The event, themed “Youth Advancing Multilateral Cooperation through Technology and Partnership,” was flagged off at the NYCN Annex Office in Abakaliki by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports, Mr. Hilary Obise, who represented the State Commissioner, Prince Richard Idike.
Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner, Mr. Obise declared the event open and charged the youth to use their energy and innovation to advance society.
He emphasized the state government’s commitment to young people, stating, “The youth council of Ebonyi is now the heartbeat of the state’s development agenda.
The Governor, Right Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, sees the youth as a vital ally in his administration.” He encouraged the youth to stay focused and united, assuring them that “Your time has come.”
The Ministry of Works and Transport showed its support with a ₦500,000 cash donation, presented by Comrade Linus Nkwede.
He assured the attendees that the ministry would be a committed partner throughout the week’s activities, stating, “We are not just patrons in name; we are committed to walking this journey with you.”
In his welcome address, Comrade Douglas Ochishi, Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ebonyi State chapter, paid tribute to the commissioners for their support.
He urged young people to focus on cooperation over competition, noting, “We’re not just organizing events — we’re mentoring the next generation to take over with honour, wisdom, and innovation.”
He also encouraged forgiveness and reconciliation among different youth groups to build bridges for collective growth.
Other speakers, including Comrade Andrew Chibueze Elom and Dr. Onyinyechi Nwankwo, stressed the importance of meaningful empowerment over rhetoric and called for synergy among all youth bodies.
The week’s itinerary, detailed by Planning Committee Chairman Comrade Onuoha Nwakpu Omenyi, includes media advocacy on voter registration, site visits to government projects, and a state-wide road walk.
As the week continues, stakeholders are hopeful that Ebonyi youth will set a new standard for constructive engagement and strategic partnerships.
