Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has paid glowing tribute to his players after leading the nation to its second FIFA World Cup title, describing the squad as a remarkable generation that has grown together into a united and successful team.
An emotional De la Fuente reflected on the journey that culminated in Spain’s historic triumph, saying the players had become more than just teammates, but a family bound by a shared vision and determination.
“I feel especially proud of this generation of footballers who have grown with this idea, giving us an example of a group, of a family,” the 65-year-old coach said after the victory.
“They are players with exceptional talent. For me, it has been an honour to accompany them on this journey.”
Having also guided Spain to the UEFA Euro 2024 title, De la Fuente said the latest success crowned years of hard work and unity.
“I’m very emotional looking back. We have won everything, and that is wonderful,” he said. “They are a generation of footballers who are a source of pride for Spain. Together, we are stronger.”
Spain secured the World Cup crown with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Argentina after Ferran Torres struck the decisive goal in the 106th minute of extra time.
Despite dominating large spells of the contest, De la Fuente admitted his side should have settled the final much earlier but praised Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez for producing a series of outstanding saves to keep his team in the game.
“I think the game should have been decided earlier. Dibu’s great saves prevented us from winning sooner, but it is a World Cup final and, even with ten players at the end, you have to suffer,” he said.
Argentina played the closing stages with ten men after Enzo Fernández was sent off for a second yellow card in the 93rd minute, shortly before extra time, but Spain eventually found the breakthrough to seal another landmark achievement in the country’s football history.
