Guber Elections: Police Service Commission Implements Vigilant Oversight for 3 States

On Tuesday, the Police Service Commission (PSC) announced its preparations to dispatch staff monitors for the upcoming gubernatorial elections scheduled for November 11 in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa States.

The PSC revealed its intention to deploy these staff monitors across all senatorial districts in these three states, tasking them with the responsibility of closely supervising the conduct of police personnel engaged in election duties.

In a statement issued by the commission’s spokesperson, Ikechukwu Ani, on Tuesday night, it was emphasized that the PSC is committed to holding these police officers accountable for their actions or inactions during the election period. Any officer found to be negligent in the execution of their election-related duties will face appropriate disciplinary measures.

Dr. Solomon Arase, the Chairman of the PSC, made it clear that the police officers participating in election duties must uphold the highest standards of conduct. He stressed the need for them to adhere to established laws and guidelines governing election duty, highlighting that the success or failure of the elections significantly hinges on the behavior of these officers. Dr. Arase also warned that any misconduct during the electoral process would lead to corresponding consequences.

The PSC Chairman went further to express his hope for the safe travel of all Staff Monitors embarking on this national assignment.

In conclusion, the PSC emphasized that monitoring the behavior of the police during elections is a vital contribution to the promotion of a credible and enduring democracy in Nigeria.
