Federal Government’s Negotiations with NLC and TUC Leadership: Unveiling Insights into Strike Resolution Talks

The nationwide strike staged by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) appears poised for resolution after a “productive” meeting between the unions and the Federal Government.

Earlier, we reported that the Minister of Labour, Simon Bako Lalong, and the Minister of State for Labour, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyeajeocha, engaged in discussions with the striking unions on Wednesday. The meeting transpired at the office of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who was also present.

This development followed the nationwide strike initiated by organized labor in protest of the assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1. The organized labor is demanding the apprehension and prosecution of the alleged political thugs responsible for attacking the NLC President and other workers during a protest against unpaid salaries.

The strike, which commenced on Tuesday, has significantly impacted economic activities in various parts of the country.

After the meeting with labor leaders, the Minister of Labour addressed journalists at the State House, describing the discussions as fruitful. He revealed that, following comprehensive deliberations, the labor leaders had agreed to consult with their constituencies and provide feedback.

He stated, “The meeting was in respect to what happened, especially in Imo State, and this meeting has heavy security considerations, which is why we took the meeting at the office of the National Security Adviser. All the labor leaders were also here with us. We had a very fruitful discussion. They have also agreed to take it back home to their constituencies so that they can suspend the strike.”

TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo also spoke on the matter, mentioning that the Federal Government had made several appeals and promises during the meeting, potentially leading to the suspension of the strike. He said, “We had a robust conversation where a lot of assurances were given in furtherance to the release that was made by the NSA this morning that some people have been apprehended. They made several appeals and promises to us, so we said let’s go back and reappraise all the conversations we have had and we will communicate accordingly.
