Kano Police Warn Against Potential Violent Protests Following APC’s Appeal Court Victory

The Kano State Police have issued a cautionary message regarding the possibility of violent protests by certain party supporters in response to the recent Appeal Court judgment favoring the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The State Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Usaini Gumel, sternly warned that individuals attempting to disturb the peace in the state would face arrest and the full force of the law.

The police have reportedly received credible information indicating that specific political party loyalists are utilizing unconventional media platforms to mobilize supporters and plan street protests in reaction to the Kano State Governorship Appeal Court’s verdict delivered on Friday, November 17, 2023.

Gumel emphasized, “The information revealed that the intention of the protesters is to shut down the State in an action which may likely result in violence. It’s on this note that the police command issued a warning to residents of the state to be extra-careful as whoever intends to conduct any protest or procession should do so in accordance with the provisions of the law.”

He reminded the public that a peace accord had been signed by the leaderships of both the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the APC with the Kano State Police Command before the court ruling. This accord aimed to maintain harmony and ensure a peaceful political landscape in Kano State, regardless of the judgment’s outcome.

Gumel stated, “The leadership of the two political parties promised that no politically motivated clusters of people would be allowed at any location under whatever guise, their supporters would not engage in any mass action suggesting preparation for violent processions, protests, or celebrations that may trigger reactions, unguarded statements from their members likely to increase political tension or undermine the security arrangements and sanctity of the judiciary.”

The Commissioner of Police urged all residents to remain calm and avoid any unlawful gatherings, protests, or processions that might lead to violence.
