Ninety-two Ebonyi indigenes have departed for the United Kingdom to pursue postgraduate studies at top universities, under the state government’s scholarship programme aimed at strengthening human capital development.

The scholars left on Monday from Chuba Okadigbo International Airport in Ezza, in what officials describe as a continuation of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s commitment to investing in education and equipping young people with global exposure.

Since the inception of his administration, Governor Nwifuru has sponsored hundreds of Ebonyi indigenes for overseas training, with 285 students benefiting last year alone, many of whom have already obtained Master’s degrees. The departure of this new cohort further cements the administration’s growing legacy in educational investment.

Addressing the scholars at the send-off ceremony, Governor Nwifuru urged them to uphold discipline, hard work, and ethical conduct, stressing that the scholarship is a collective investment by the people of Ebonyi State.

“Each naira spent on this programme reflects the sacrifices of our farmers, traders, public servants, and artisans. Your success will strengthen Ebonyi’s future,” he said.

“Make the most of every lecture, assignment, and opportunity. Upon your return, you will become foundational pillars supporting the growth of the state.”

Chief Chaka Nweze, Chairman of the Ebonyi State Scholarship Board, commended Governor Nwifuru for prioritising human capital development, describing the programme as a “trans-generational investment” that will benefit future generations.

He encouraged the scholars to remain focused, make the most of the opportunity, and return home as exemplary citizens ready to contribute to the state’s development.

Stakeholders such as the SSG, Prof Grace Umezurike, commissioner for information, Barr. Ikeuwah Omebe, Christian Asaga among others at the events lauded the governor for initiative stating this has projected the state to a limelight.
