Ebonyi State Governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has pledged to return Abakaliki Football Club, popularly known as De Rice Boys, to the Nigerian National League (NNL), following their recent relegation from the division.

The Governor made this commitment during a courtesy visit by the team to the Government House, Centenary City, Abakaliki, where he also rewarded the players with ₦1 million each—totaling ₦48 million—for emerging second in the recently concluded Presidential Cup.

Governor Nwifuru, who said he personally watched their match, praised the team’s fighting spirit, aggressive play, and overall performance at the tournament despite the earlier disappointment in the NNL season.

“I was impressed by your energy and resilience on the pitch. You’ve shown that you’re not just a team but a force. You may be relegated now, but your performance at the Presidential Cup proves you belong at the top,” the Governor stated.

He also lauded the team’s anthem, describing it as inspirational, and encouraged the players to stay focused and committed to their development.

The Governor assured that the state government would take deliberate steps to ensure the team returns to the NNL in the next football season. He further directed that players’ salaries be sustained until October 2025, with a comprehensive review in November.

He charged the coaching crew to provide equal opportunities for all players, noting that talent should be nurtured and exposed to both national and international markets.

In his response, the team’s representative, Mr. Cyril Timothy, thanked Governor Nwifuru for his consistent support and fatherly concern for the welfare of the team. He assured that De Rice Boys would continue to make the state proud and work harder in upcoming competitions.
