Ebonyi Govt Ends Amasiri Curfew, Restores Normalcy

The Ebonyi State Security Council has lifted the dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed on Amasiri Community in Afikpo Local Government Area following months of tension and insecurity in the area.

The decision was announced after the State Security Council meeting held at the Governor’s Office, Ochudo Centenary City, Abakaliki.

Briefing journalists, the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Ebonyi State, Mrs. Eneh Kolawole, said security agencies would continue to maintain surveillance in the community despite the lifting of the restriction.

“Minimum security will still be deployed to forestall further breakdown of law and order, while those apprehended in connection with the crisis will be charged to court,” she stated.

The curfew was imposed on January 30, 2026, after the killing and alleged beheading of four persons from Okporojo Community in Edda Local Government Area.

Speaking on the development, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Ben Odoh, said the government’s decision followed peace efforts and reconciliatory appeals initiated by stakeholders from Amasiri.

“The action followed a series of letters of remorse from Amasiri people which were accepted by the Okporojo people and their various hierarchy of traditional institutions,” Odoh said.

Dr. Odoh also disclosed that the proposed delisting of Amasiri Development Centre had been rejected after appeals by elders and founding leaders of the area.

“We received persuasion and pleas from the Founding Fathers and Elders Council to reject the delisting of Amasiri Development Centre. Consequently, a memo will be sent to the State Assembly conveying the rejection and by implication we now have complete 64 Development Centres,” he added.

Also speaking, the Ebonyi State Head of Service, Dr. Rita Mary Okoro, announced the immediate reopening of schools and hospitals in the community.

She further revealed that civil servants who were redeployed from Amasiri during the crisis would be returned to their duty posts.

“A memo will be sent to relevant agencies to recall all those civil servants who were transferred out of Amasiri as a result of the crisis,” she said.

The Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Barr. Ikeuwa Omebe, assured residents that the state government remained committed to the protection of lives and property across Ebonyi State.
